Terms of Service
Last updated: October 20, 2026
These terms govern your use of Threadbound (the "app"), available at app.threadbound.ink, and this website (threadbound.ink). By using either, you agree to them.
Who we are
Threadbound is operated by Allay Society Pty Ltd, trading as Threadbound ("we", "us"), based in Australia. When you use the app or buy a license, you are contracting with us. For purchases, Stripe acts as our merchant of record (see "Purchases and payment" below). You can reach us at threadboundapp@pm.me.
What Threadbound is
Threadbound is writing and plot-tracking software for novelists. It runs entirely in your browser as a local-first Progressive Web App: your project data is stored on your own device, with optional export/import and Google Drive backup. Optional modules (such as Manuscript, Codex, Notebooks and Multi-Calendar) can be installed per project.
License to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Threadbound for your own writing projects. The license is granted on payment of a one-time fee, at the price shown at the time of purchase. It is not a subscription and doesn't renew. A license includes every module and every future version of Threadbound, including new major versions, at no further charge.
Threadbound, its code, design, name, logo and documentation remain our property (or that of our licensors). You may not resell, sublicense, or redistribute the app itself, or share your license key beyond the devices allowed below.
Free trial
Every user gets a free 7-day trial, with all features, no card and no sign-up. The trial is run by the app on your own device: it starts the first time you open a version of the app that includes licensing, and its start date is stored in your browser's storage. We don't hold a record of trials.
License keys and devices
- After you buy, we email you a license key (in the form
TB-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) and show it once on the page you land on after checkout, in the browser you bought in. Keep the email: it's how you get your key back. License keys are not included in project backups. - Enter the key in Settings → License to activate. A key can be active on up to 5 devices at once. You can deactivate a device from that device, or free a slot from another one, in Settings → License.
- Activation needs an internet connection once per device. After that the app checks your license offline. When it's online it re-checks about once a week; if a check fails or you're offline, nothing changes.
- If you lose your key, use "Lost your key?" in the app, or email us from the address you bought with.
- Your key is for you. Don't publish it or share it with people who haven't bought a license. We may deactivate a key that's being widely shared.
When a trial ends or a license is refunded
We will never lock you out of your writing. If your trial ends without a license, or a license is refunded or reversed by a chargeback, Threadbound becomes read-only: you can still open, read and search every project, and export, backup (including Google Drive backup) and restore keep working. Creating and editing content is turned off until a license is activated.
Your content
Everything you write in Threadbound — your threads, plot events, manuscript text, notes and any other project content — is yours. We claim no ownership over it and no license to use it beyond what's needed to run the app on your own device (i.e., none — it never leaves your device unless you export it or enable Drive backup yourself).
Security of your data
Threadbound is built so that only its own code runs alongside your writing. The app and this website both send a Content Security Policy, a rule your browser enforces, that blocks scripts from any other source and blocks scripts embedded in page content. In practice:
- The app runs only code served from Threadbound's own domain. It contains no analytics, advertising, or tracking scripts, and no third-party code can be added to it by anything you import, paste, or open.
- The one exception is Google Drive backup. If you choose to connect it, the app loads Google's own sign-in and file-picker code from Google, because those services only work that way. If you never use Drive backup, that code is never loaded.
- This website loads no outside code at all. When you click Buy, it simply sends you to a checkout page hosted by Stripe, which takes payment securely on its own site. Nothing from Stripe runs on this website or in the app.
- Backup files are checked when you import them, and text pasted into the Manuscript editor is cleaned of anything other than basic formatting, so a file or paste from someone else can't carry code into the app.
These protections significantly reduce risk but can't eliminate it: the security of your device, your browser, and any backups you store elsewhere remains your responsibility, as set out below.
Your responsibility for backups
Because Threadbound stores your data locally in your browser, it can be lost if you clear your browser's site data, uninstall the app, switch devices, or your device fails, and you haven't backed it up. Threadbound provides export/import and optional Google Drive backup specifically so you can protect against this — we strongly recommend using one of them regularly. Threadbound is not liable for any loss of data that results from browser storage being cleared, a device being lost or damaged, or any other cause outside our direct control (subject to "Your legal rights" below).
Purchases and payment
Threadbound is sold as a one-time purchase through Stripe, which is our merchant of record (using its Managed Payments service). That means Stripe, through its Link service (your receipt names Link, LLC, and your statement shows LINK.COM* Threadbound or simply Link, depending on your bank), is the seller of record for your purchase: it takes your payment, calculates and collects any sales tax or VAT, issues your receipt, and handles payment support, fraud checks and disputes. The terms shown to you at Stripe's checkout govern payment, billing and taxes, and Stripe's privacy policy covers the payment details you give it. We never see your card details.
- Price. The price is US$40. Stripe may show it in your local currency, and adds any tax, before you pay. It is a single payment; there's no renewal, recurring charge or subscription.
- Discounts. From time to time we may run time-limited discounts. A discount applies as described when it's offered, and ends at the time stated. Discounts aren't applied to purchases already made.
- Receipts and support. Stripe emails your receipt. For payment questions, contact us, or, if you created a Link account when you paid, manage your order at link.com. For anything about the app or your key, contact us.
- Refunds. See our Refund Policy: you have 14 days to ask for a full refund, no reason needed.
Emails we send
We email you only about your purchase: your license key, and a key reminder if you ask for one. We send it through our email provider, Resend. Stripe separately emails your receipt. We don't send marketing email and we don't keep a mailing list. See the Privacy Policy.
Third-party services
Google Drive backup, if you choose to enable it, is provided by Google and governed by Google's own terms of service. Payments are provided by Stripe (above). Our website and license server run on Cloudflare, and license emails are delivered by Resend. Threadbound is not responsible for the availability, performance, or policies of these services. See our Privacy Policy for how each is used, including a note on how Google's own AI features may interact with content stored in your Drive.
We intend to offer Proton Drive as an additional backup option once Proton's platform supports it. Once available, its use will likewise be governed by Proton's own terms of service, not ours.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Threadbound for any unlawful purpose, or to store or process content you don't have the right to.
- Use the app or this website to commit fraud, send spam, or infringe anyone's intellectual property rights, including using a stolen payment method or abusing refunds or chargebacks to keep a license you haven't paid for.
- Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or interfere with the app's operation beyond what's permitted by applicable law.
- Probe, scan or test the security of the app, this website or our license server; introduce malware; or scrape or automate requests to them (for example, trying to guess license keys).
- Use the app in a way that attempts to disrupt or overload the infrastructure it or this website is hosted on.
- Share, resell or publish your license key beyond the allowed devices.
Suspension and termination
We may suspend or end a license, or block access to the license server, if you materially breach these terms, if a payment is reversed or not completed, if we reasonably believe there's a security or fraud risk, or after repeated or serious breaches of the acceptable-use rules above. Suspending a license makes the app read-only as described above; it never deletes your data, and you can always export it.
You may stop using Threadbound at any time. Since there's no account to close, this simply means uninstalling the app and, if you like, exporting your data first. If you want your license record removed, see the Privacy Policy. We reserve the right to discontinue the app or this website, though we'll aim to give reasonable notice if that ever becomes necessary, and to keep already-licensed copies working.
No warranty
Threadbound is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee the app, this website or the license server will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of data loss.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Threadbound and its creator will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, arising out of or related to your use of the app, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability to you for anything connected with the app is limited to the amount you paid for your license.
Your legal rights
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any right you have under consumer protection law that can't legally be limited or excluded, including the Australian Consumer Law and consumer rights in the UK and EU. Where those laws give you a remedy, such as a refund, repair or replacement for a fault, it applies in addition to our Refund Policy.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated terms. We'll update the "Last updated" date above whenever a change is made. A change won't reduce what a license you've already bought includes.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Australia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. This doesn't take away any mandatory consumer rights you have in the country where you live.
