Threadbound vs Campfire: modular writing tools compared

The short version. Campfire and Threadbound are both modular: you use the parts you need and ignore the rest. Campfire is a larger, cloud-based suite of 18 writing and worldbuilding modules, including maps, species and a language builder, with collaboration and a mobile app. Threadbound is smaller, starts as a plot tracker, keeps your work on your own device, and costs one flat price with every module included. If you want the broadest worldbuilding toolkit, Campfire is the stronger choice. If you want plot structure first, and a predictable price, Threadbound is worth a look.

Simple out of the box, bigger when you want it

Campfire is modular too, which makes it the closest match to how Threadbound works. The difference is scale. Campfire offers 18 modules, and its interface reflects that. Threadbound is deliberately smaller.

Threadbound starts as a plot tracker with threads, a Timeline, a Board and a to-do list, and nothing else. When your project needs more, you switch on add-on modules from Settings, one project at a time: Manuscript for writing, Codex for characters and worldbuilding, Multi-calendar for invented calendars, Notebooks for research, Goals for word counts, and more. Every module is included in the one price, and switching one off hides it without deleting your work.

Price

Campfire's pricing is flexible, and the free tier is a real strength: you can use every module within limits before paying anything. Its own pricing page shows the full set of modules at US$12 a month, listed as reduced from US$19, with annual and lifetime options too. Independent reviews put a lifetime purchase of all modules at around US$375, and individual modules cost less (for example, Manuscript at about US$45 for a lifetime licence), but check Campfire's pricing page for current figures. Annual and lifetime purchases can be refunded within 30 days.

Threadbound is US$40 once, with every module and every future version included, and one licence can be active on up to 5 devices. Over a few years of monthly billing the gap becomes large, though if you only need one or two Campfire modules, buying just those may cost about the same as we do. We offer a full refund within 14 days, and a free 7-day trial.

Plotting and structure

Threadbound is built around plot. You create threads, give events dates, including in a calendar of your own invention, and see them as lanes on a zoomable Timeline or as a column per thread on a Board. Threads can be marked open or resolved. Campfire has story planning and timeline tools as modules, linked to its characters and locations, which suits writers who want everything cross-referenced across a large world.

Worldbuilding

Campfire is stronger here, and by a wide margin. It has interactive maps, species, a calendar creator and even conlang software, and its modules link to one another. Threadbound's Codex covers characters, nested locations, two-way relationships, lore with a history of eras, and links from each entry to the plot events and prose where it appears. It does not have maps, and it is smaller in scope. If your world needs maps and languages, Campfire is the better fit.

Writing the manuscript

Both include a place to write. Threadbound's Manuscript module has an act, chapter and scene binder, a focus mode, inline comments, daily snapshots and word counts, and a Status view that shows which plot events have no scene written yet. Campfire offers a word processor module and exports to PDF and EPUB. Threadbound exports to PDF and Markdown only for now, so if you want an EPUB straight from your writing tool, Campfire has the advantage.

Sync, collaboration and your data

Campfire is a cloud service: your work lives in your account, you can work from a browser, desktop or mobile app, and you can invite any number of collaborators. That is a real advantage for co-authors, editors and shared worlds. It also means your work depends on the service being available and on your account staying active. Campfire's free plan makes elements beyond its limits read-only if you downgrade or cancel.

Threadbound is local-first. Your work is stored on your own device, nothing is kept on our servers, and there is no account to lose access to. Backups are plain text files, or automatic backups to your own Google Drive. The trade-off is that there is no live sync between devices and no collaboration yet, and Threadbound is an installable web app rather than a native mobile app.

Who should choose which

Choose Campfire if you

  • are building a large world that needs maps, species or invented languages
  • collaborate with co-authors or editors
  • want to pay only for the modules you use, or start free
  • want a native mobile app and EPUB export

Choose Threadbound if you

  • want plot threads, a timeline and a board at the centre of your planning
  • prefer one flat price over monthly billing or buying modules one by one
  • want your work stored on your own device, with plain-text backups
  • like a smaller tool that stays out of your way

Threadbound is free to try, with no card needed. The sample project is a good way to see the Timeline and Board.
