Patch Notes

New

• Threadbound is for sale. One payment of US$40, no subscription. Every module and every future version is included.
• Free 7-day trial. Everyone gets a week with every feature, no card needed. If you were using the beta, your trial starts when this update reaches you.
• License keys. After you buy, your key is shown on the page you land on and emailed to you. Paste it in Settings → License. It works on up to 5 devices, and you can free a slot from any device. Lost it? "Lost your key?" in the same place emails it again.

Good to know

• Threadbound never locks you out of your writing. If a trial ends or a license is refunded, the app becomes read-only: you can still open, read and search every project, and export, backup and restore keep working.
• Payments are handled by Stripe, so tax is worked out for you at checkout. Refunds are available for 14 days, no reason needed. See the refund policy.

New

• Character art link. Add a link to a character's art, such as a Hero Forge share link or any other https:// address, from the pencil popup. A "View character art" link then appears on their profile and opens in a new tab. Nothing is uploaded or fetched, and the link is included in backups.

Improved

• Codex top bar. ⚙ Categories now sits beside New window, so it's reachable from every section, and the Characters / World / Lore / Plot tabs can be dragged into whatever order suits you.
• Notes live on the Overview. A character's notes sit under their facts instead of on a separate tab (Focus mode still works).
• Characters list. Each group is its own card, with the one-line summary under every name.
• Lists in long text. The bullet button now makes real • bullets; press it again for dashes, and again to remove the list.
• Summary when creating. New entries from a category list and from Add to… now have a one-line summary box, like new characters and the edit popup.

Improved

• Lists in long text. Character descriptions (and every other long-text field) have • List and 1. List buttons. Press Enter to continue a list, and Enter on an empty item to finish it.
• Renaming. Characters and entries have a pencil beside the trash button that opens a popup to edit the name and summary.
• Pronouns are no longer offered when creating a character. If an older project still has a Pronouns field, you can delete it under Profile fields.

Fixed

• Creating a character in Codex replaced every lowercase "s" in the name and summary with a space ("Vashkir" became "Va hkir"). New characters now keep their text exactly as typed. Characters created in 0.13.1 need those letters retyped by hand.

New

• Codex tour. A guided walkthrough of Codex on the sample project. Start it from Settings → Help, or from the Tour link beside Codex in Settings → Modules.
• Choosing a place is easier. "Located in" and "Also in" open a tree you can unfold, with a category filter and a Places only switch, and you can create a new place right there instead of only picking from existing ones.
• Character templates. New characters start from Basic (a few lines, for minor characters) or Detailed (the full profile, for major ones). Gender (male, female or other) replaces Pronouns in new projects.
• Categories explain themselves. Each category has a short note on what belongs in it, which you can edit. The Fantasy set also gains Army, Religious order, Mercenary company, Criminal group and Order under Organisations.
• Drag to reorder families, categories, fields and choice options, instead of using arrows.
• The Codex sidebar can be dragged wider or narrower, and has Expand all and Collapse all.

Improved

• Appearances, Contains, Connections, Relationships and character Description pages are split into clear sections, so they no longer blur together.
• Creating a place from another place's link field, such as a nation's Capital, now puts it inside that nation automatically.

Fixed

• Allowing several choices on a character's Role broke the Characters filters. Role now works either way, and can't be deleted, since the Characters list depends on it.

New

• Codex module. Structured worldbuilding and characters for stories with a lot of world. Pick a starter set (fantasy, science fiction, contemporary, or blank) and every category and field is yours to change. Turn it on in Settings → Modules.
• Categories and places. Everything in Codex has a category (nation, city, lake…) and a place in your world. List all your lakes in one go, or open a nation to see everything inside it, with a Locations tree to browse by place.
• Characters get their own section: grouped by role, with profiles covering their details, description, relationships and notes. A Parent on one profile shows as a Child on the other.
• Lore has its own section for magic systems, languages, religions, customs and history, each with room for the long writing. Its History view lays your eras out in time and lists every plot event that falls inside each one, worked out from the dates alone.
• Connections between places, factions and objects (allied with, vassal of, owned by…), and fields that link entries, like a nation's ruler or capital.
• Plot links. Tag where each event happens and who is involved, from an entry or from the new Plot list. Every entry gets an Appearances tab, characters show their age at each event, and events set in a city also count for its region and nation.
• With Manuscript, Codex finds where each entry is named in your prose, suggests events you may have missed linking (you confirm each one), and tells you when a character hasn't been seen for several chapters. It's plain name matching, done on your device.
• The sample project now has a Codex of Middle-earth to explore.

Improved

• The Goals and Personalise modules are now listed on the Threadbound website.

New

• Personalise module. Soft pastel colour themes, extra fonts, and a “soft shapes” switch, plus links (a Pinterest board, a Spotify playlist, any web page) on your threads and events and an emoji icon for each thread. Turn it on in Settings → Modules; the look options are under Settings → Appearance.
• Goals module. Set word-count goals (with a one-click November challenge), see how much of your book is planned and written, and keep track of your writing streaks.

Improved

• Threads and named periods now have 24 colours to choose from, including soft pastels.
• A sharper Threadbound logo and app icon.
• Settings → Modules lists the modules alphabetically.

Fixed

• Google Drive sync now checks for changes on its own on a phone.

New

• Sync between devices. When you open a project, Threadbound checks Google Drive for a newer copy saved from another device and offers to update. Set it up in Settings → Cloud Backup. Items deleted permanently don’t sync yet.
• Bullet and numbered lists in the Manuscript and Notebooks editors.

Improved

• Timeline lanes sit closer together, so more threads fit on screen.
• Threadbound fits phone screens better: the tabs scroll sideways and Settings no longer runs off the edge.
• The Manuscript and Notebooks editors show where the page ends.
• Renaming a project renames its Google Drive backup too, and the update popup’s button now says “Update”.

Fixed

• Uneven paragraph spacing in the editors, US-style dates in history, and a handful of smaller fixes to the Board and Cloud Backup.

New

• Notebooks module. Keep worldbuilding, character notes and research in notebooks and sections, with the same editor as Manuscript: comments, snapshots and focus mode. You can drag sections between notebooks, restore deleted ones from the trash, and open notebooks in a second window. Export to PDF (A4) or Markdown. Turn it on in Settings → Modules.
• Collapse and expand acts, chapters and notebooks in Manuscript and Notebooks, one at a time or all at once.
• Event and thread popups save as you type. Closing one never loses what you entered, and “Undo changes” puts things back the way they were.
• Choose when to update. The “new version” popup has an Ignore button, and Settings → About can check for and install updates.
• “What’s new” links in the update popup and in Settings → About lead here.
• Link Plot Events: filter the list by thread. Events are now listed in date order.
• The Threadbound title in the top left opens this website in a new tab.

Improved

• Undated events appear as faded “ghost” cards on the Board and Timeline, and sort below dated events, oldest first.
• More space between paragraphs in the Manuscript and Notebooks editors.
• Drag a chapter onto the “Unsorted” heading to take it out of its act, or a section out of its notebook.
• Long titles in the Manuscript and Notebooks lists have more room. The edit buttons only appear when you hover over a row.
• Help and About are now separate sections in Settings.

Fixed

• Scrolling over a tall Board column now scrolls that column instead of sliding the board sideways.
• The Timeline minimap’s highlight no longer fills the whole bar at Month and Year zoom.
• Deleted scenes no longer appear in Manuscript’s PDF and Markdown exports, and an export straight after typing now includes the latest text.
• Selecting text in a popup and letting go outside it no longer closes the popup.
• Google Drive backup now stays connected when you’re signed into more than one Google account.

The first public beta. Everything below is new.

• Threads, Timeline, Board and To-do. Reorder and recolour threads, and add details: type, description, tropes, goal, stakes and notes. The Timeline zooms from hours to decades and has a minimap and multi-day events. The Board gives each thread a column, and there's a to-do list.
• Your own calendar. Name the months, set their lengths and name the calendar. Tracking time of day is optional, and a day can have any number of hours.
• Multiple projects. Switch between novels, rename them and delete them. A sample project and a guided walkthrough help you get started.
• Recycle Bin for threads and events, emptied automatically after a period you choose.
• Backups you can read. Export your whole library as one zip of plain text files. Importing merges safely and keeps whichever version is newer. You can also turn on automatic backup to Google Drive and restore from it.
• Modules, all included and switched on per project:
  • Multi-calendar: extra calendars aligned to your main one, a date converter, second calendars' dates on the Timeline, and named periods such as seasons, festivals and eras.
  • Manuscript: an act, chapter and scene binder with a writing editor, comments, snapshots, a whole-chapter reading view and word counts. A Status view shows which plot events have scenes, and you can export to Markdown or PDF.
• Install it like an app from your browser, and use it offline. Light and dark themes.
• Private by design. Your writing stays on your device. There's no tracking, and nothing loads from outside sources except Google's sign-in, and only if you use Drive backup.
